Pakistan has launched a new universal health care plan called Sehat Sahulat that could radically change the way the health care is paid for in the country. Nearly 150 million people are covered under this new plan, and it is available to all families regardless of their income status. In fact, even the Prime Minister is eligible under the program. This makes the system similar to the NHS or the Canadian health care system. While this is still a nascent universal health care plan, it is remarkable how many treatments that were previously difficult to access for the poor are now possible. It is worth studying how this system works and it may perhaps serve as a model health plan for the region.
